When I went to the Philippines in 2009 to begin writing my first book, thought I knew what to expect. I had a young Canadian/Filipino friend who had taught me everything that he had been taught by his family. He has been there once or twice as a child, but it had been years since he had returned to his roots. He taught what he knew, and he believed in what he taught me. So, I went to this com on the other side of the ocean with preconceived notions about a society I had never before been a part of. I learned quickly that most of what I knew was wrong.
